The Professional Gamer - September 11, 2017

Hello readers! We are one week past Nan Desu Kan (two weeks past Fort Collins Comic Con), and I'm finally feeling a bit rested and ready to get back into the normal routine again. Podcast edits are coming along, and will be posted as I complete them. I'll also be putting my thoughts to those two conventions to pen in the next week as well. Until then, let's talk about the ordinary things that I've done this week.

Crystal and I have been watching some of this season's simulcast anime on Crunchyroll. Several weeks ago, we started watching Restaurant to Another World (Isekai Shokudou) and this past week we started watching Elegant Yokai Apartment Life (Yokai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou). I have managed to catch up to the simulcast on both of these shows. Restaurant to Another World is about about Western cuisine restaurant in Japan that is connected to another world every Saturday. Each episode tells the story of a patron and the food that they order. There are a few tenuous connections between some of these patrons; however, the portals to the restaurant appear in various parts of the other world, allowing many different people to access the .restaurant.

Meanwhile, Elegant Yokai Apartment Life is about a high school student whose parents have died. Although his relatives are willing to take him in, Yushi feels that he is a burden and applies to a school that has dormatories. Unfortunately, the dorms burn down only a few days before he is supposed to start school. Faced with the prospect of having to move back in with his relatives, Yushi starts hunting for an apartment that he can afford on his part-time job. The only thing he can find is a room in an old creepy building. The building is actually haunted, and exists at a sort of dimensional cross-roads. Aside from the supernatural themes, the show actually deals with issues of friendship and masculinity. I did not expect this show to discuss some of these themes, but it has been a pleasant surprise.

Other than that, I've ordered parts for a new computer and am looking forward to getting it up and running soon. Hope you check in again next week and until then, game on!

The Professional Gamer - June 26, 2017

Hi readers! In spite of getting drenched during my commute this morning, I'm feeling good about the weekend. I've got a giant pork roast in the smoker for my (belated) birthday party, and lots of friends over tonight to work on artwork and other projects. Life is pretty good!

The highlight of my geekiness this week was showing Kiki's Delivery Service to my brother's girlfriend. I think I have talked about this movie previously, but I'm always so delighted to show it to someone new. The themes of finding your passion and inner strength, moving to a new city, and establishing oneself as a person in a career. In addition, the new blu-ray version is great, with crisp, vivid colors. I'm regretting that I don't have some better to speakers to enjoy the remastered audio as well.

I'm looking forward to Denver Comic Con next weekend, but it will likely prevent me from getting my regular article together. I'm planning to write a bit on my experiences and the comics that I end up buying. Have a great week and game on!

COAF 2017 Review

Hey everyone, Carebear here to share my experience from Colorado Animefest 2017. This is the second year for the convention and you could see some growth and improvement all over the Con. This was also the second year for it to be held at the Renaissance Hotel in Denver, a small but in my humble opinion well setup hotel. So, let’s get started with the review. I’m going to start by talking about the things I went to see on each day and then I’ll talk about some of the other things that were happening throughout the weekend.

Steam Anime Sale

Do you like anime? Do you like anime video games? Then good news! Steam is having a sale on both of them. You can get games such as "BlazBlue: Chronophantasma Extend", "RWBY Grimm "Eclipse", "Megadimension Neptunia VII" and many, many more. I never really realized how many anime games Steam has until I looked at this list. Then, thanks to a partnership with CrunchyRoll, you can also buy actual anime such as "The Testament of Sister New Devil", "Re:Zero", and "Free".  You still need to stream them, but you actually do own them.

You can see the full list here: http://store.steampowered.com/sale/anime-weekend-sale/

So what are you picking up?

Ghost in the Shell (2017) - Mission Success!

Ghost in the Shell (2017) - Mission Success!

"Ghost in the Shell" is kind of an anime staple with the original movie having been released over 20 years ago. It is quite the risk to take it on and make it live action. So first I want to give props to DreamWorks and Paramount (apparently there is quite the history on this film actually making it to theaters) for taking the risk. The resulting movie is literally a live action anime. The visuals presented in the movie are absolutely amazing. They bring the city to life in ways that felt super science-fictiony but still grounded in the realm of possibility ... eventually. The characters are also well done. The are the characters that we have know (assuming you have seen any "Ghost in the Shell" movies / show) each still have their unique traits that make them, them.

Japan's Olympic 2020 Ambassadors - Most Animated Choice in History!

The 2020 Olympics are still a few years out, but one does not rest when getting ready to prepare for the largest sporting event a nation can host! And normally, I wouldn't care about it either (OK, that is lie, but I don't go out of my way to watch it). So how do you get people like me interested in what is happening with the Olympics? You relate it to something that I am interested in!

The Professional Gamer - January 2, 2016

Hello and Happy New Year to my fellow geeks! I hope that you have all had a good holiday break and are ready to head back to work, school, or just continuing to laze about the house. I'm heading back to work tomorrow, but that still gives me some precious time in order to play a few more games, read more comics, or watch more anime. What have I been doing for the past few weeks? Lots!
