Nan Desu Kan 2004
By: Assimilator

So as I said on the main page this was my first Anime Convention. Now for those of you that do not know Anime is Japanese Animation. No some of this can have a child like flair attached to it, but for the most part these have stuff in it that only Adults will truly recognize. If you have Cartoon Network you can catch some Anime on Saturday night and during Adult Swim with shows such as Inuyasha and Wolf Rain.

But I digress, the Anime Con was quite a bit of fun. The people that attended the con seemed uncharacteristically friendly most of the time. One of my friends who was dressed as Haruku from FLCL was randomly hugged by not one but three complete strangers and had her picture taken a few times. People also feel more comfortable here, showing the real them and wearing clothing that they normally would not even touch. This ranges form the Sung Mina from Soul Caliber 2 to the guy dressed as Spawn (I will hopefully get a picture of him to show you). There was even one girl dressed as a moggle with a giant papier-mache he head.

There was also lots of neat stuff to purchase at the con. The dealers room has just about everything you could want that pertains in anime and some of the Japanese culture. Also if you don't know what kind of anime you might be interested in, no worries. There as plenty of viewing rooms with different anime's running all during the Weekend. Now some of these might be dubbed, sub titled, or in Japanese. But that is ok as long as there is a lot of visual cues to let you know what is going on. In those rooms they sometimes has counting contests. INSANE counting contests where you are told to count how many of a certain item you see every time the camera changes. We counted jets in Area 88, which came to a grand total of 173. Then we counted cat girls (if you don't know what this continue reading the words cat girls until you get it) in UFO Princess Valkyrie which came to a total of 580 (I was like 17 to low). And the final one we read was in Crusher Joe were we counted cloakers. Now in this one they told use that if there was more than 20 on the screen it counted as 20. And with this rule the total counted came to around 1400. Half-way through that last one it came as more a contest to see who could come up with the better movie quote for the scene then how many cloakers were in the episode.

Next I will go over the AMV (Anime Music Video) Contest. Now in this contest what you do is splice up some anime(s) and match them to a song. Now this may not seem hard, but lip syncing on thing to another thing that initially have nothing to do with each other can be quite a chore, but several groups of people did a great job. One was Final Fantasy X-2 with Luna on stage singing Music get the Best of Me (I think that is the songs title) with other clips moved in. Made it so seamless that it looked like that was what it was originally made that way. Then there was the Evangelon: Advance Wars 3 promo (spoof) that was done to look like it was a actual game preview. And the audience choice and winner of the golden pool cleaner from Pool Cleaners from Distance Planets that use an anime were paper is a weapon for one lady mixed with the song Paper Back Writer.

So all in all this was quite a fun weekend. I saw many people in customs and experienced something new. So would I go again, you bet, and I hope I see you at NDK 2005.
