Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil - Proteus An ancient evil stirs again as a crazed cult attempts to free an elder deity dedicated to the destruction of the earth. Only a brave group of adventurers has what it takes to stop the Cult of the Elemental Eye and restore the world to peace. This campaign module, really a whole campaign in and of itself, is part of Wizard of the Coast’s (WOTC) “Return to…” series. This campaign is very well thought out. Our players have not made it even half way through the book yet, and they have already missed a few of the side quests. The planning is very in depth to the point that all of the monsters in the dungeon have a reason to be there and they have a relationship with the monsters that live in the other rooms near them. I’ll be coming back to this review whenever my friends and I actually finish the module. Until then, I’ll give a rating to it. Difficulty- Difficulty levels are appropriately marked and designed to build player character powers enough to take on the next wave of more difficult challenges Planning- Almost everything is ready for the DM to use in his game. All characters are prepared with short descriptions, treasures are stocked with useful items, and random encounter tables are populated with reasonable creatures. Ease of Use- This module requires a lot of reading to prepare for. There are so many subtle side plots that a DM unfamiliar with them is likely to not drop the hooks that his players need to catch them. I have probably been guilty of this myself by not playing many of the NPCs correctly and ensuring that the PCs have all the clues that they need to move on. Characters- NPCs in this module are well thought out. From my understanding, many of them come from the old Temple of Elemental Evil campaign from AD&D. So there is a certain nostalgia value to the older players who may want to pick this up. Architecture/Dungeons- Maps are plentiful though some are not well explained. I have had to dig through things to make sure that I am directing the characters correctly in some of the dungeons. Plot- The plot for this campaign is in-depth, with many side stories for adventures to pursue. Again, I recommend a lot reading on the part of the DM to insure that all plot threads are at least given to the PCs, even if they choose not to follow them. Overall, a very well developed story.
